By searching mainly trade directories, Ordnance Survey maps, and census returns, I have identified 32 inns that have traded at one time or another in Swaledale and Arkengarthdale since at least 1823. I plan to add here some brief stories of the 22 that no longer exist.
The first entry is an article attempting to explain the mystery of 11 inns that existed in the two dales in the mid-1800s and were all recorded with the same name of the Board. It was a curiosity that has bamboozled researchers into inn-names for 150 years, but now, at last, might be explained.
